Rolling Thunder 2009

I attended my first Rolling Thunder ride this Memorial Day weekend. Rolling Thunder is an annual motorcycle rally that is held in Washington, DC during the Memorial Day weekend to call for the government's recognition and protection of Prisoners of War (POWs) and those Missing in Action (MIAs). It was estimated that well over 500,000 bikers made their way to Washington DC this year to attend the festivities.

We started off Sunday's ride at a HD dealership bright and early. Along with 2000 or so other riders, we got a police escort into the Pentagon parking lot to meet up with the rest of the riders. This was the rally and starting point for the ride. The parking lot was packed when we pulled up. With this many people staged, it took about 3 hours to get everyone out of the parking lot. The actual ride was just a loop through downtown DC and only last about 20 mins.

It was a long and hot day, but in the end I am very glad I did it. It was for a really good cause and was really neat to see all the patriotic pride. It was great people watching and I got to take a lot of pictures. While I was riding my bike, my girlfriend Alicia, manned the camera on the back of my bike, she got some good pictures as well.

Candid Office Promotion Shoot

I was asked to shoot some candid(aka staged) office shots for Dare Mighty Things in Arlington, VA. I believe they will be used for a website or promo video. It wasn't too much fun posing people and the lesson I learned from this shoot was that it is hard to shoot people who don't want their picture taken. Most of the office workers weren't to keen on me taking their picture...which I don't blame them. All in all though, it was a new experience and am glad I had the opportunity.

Some Miscellaneous Pictures..Odds and Ends.

This post is kind of like a clearance sale...a little bit of everything. Some of these were just test shots while messing around with my camera. Some were single pictures I have taken while I was out and about that didn't fit in anywhere else. Most, if not all were taken within the last few months. I wasn't sure what to do with them, so here they are.

DC Police Week Law Ride 2009

This week is National Police Week here in DC. This morning was the annual Law Ride, a motorcycle memorial ride for fallen police officers. This last year, 387 law enforcement officers died while in the line of duty.

I wanted to ride in it, but just wasn't feeling like getting up early to make it to the staging area, so instead I decided to watch it from the Capital. There were LOTS of bikes...more than I expected. I'd say easily a couple thousand showed up.

DC Roller Girls Championship

I attended the 2009 DC Roller Girls Championship. It was between the Cherry Blossom Bombshells and the DC Demon Cats. I also brought my new 400mm lens with me and made sure to get a lot of use out of it.

The DC Demon Cats took the championship, but only by a small margin as it was neck and neck during the whole match. It actually was very excited and entertaining to watch. The crowd was certainly in to it. The only bad thing was the humidity...I was soaked with sweat by the end of the night.

The half time show was great too. It was a jump roping crew may up of local kids and they were quite good. They got a standing ovation at the end of their performance.

This concluded this seasons Roller Girls matches...too bad I'll be in Korea next year this time.I enjoyed going to the bouts. I wonder if they have Roller Derby in Korea?

DC Kickball Weekly Recap Pictures

Once again, it was cloudy and rainy when game time came around. Luckily though, it was just sprinkles and didn't ever down pour.

I got to use my new lens for the first time. I was very impressed. Other than being HUGE and kind of hard to maneuver with, it took great pictures in the cloudy and dark environment.

I think I'll be home next Wednesday again and will probably have to check out the games then too.

My New Lens

Most purchases fall into two categories..."needs" and "wants".

My new toy falls into a third category and that would be, "doesn't need it at all, but really really really wants it." I figured that I might as well indulge in my passion now while I can, since I am single, no kids and only live once. At least that is how I convinced myself to buy it.

I splurged and bought another new lens last week. I am now the proud owner of Nikon's 400mm 2.8 AFS VR. It will be great for sport photography and wildlife shooting. Its big and heavy, but is a super fast and sharp lens.

Florida Trip, Part 3: Along the Way and In Between

I did a fair amount of driving while in Florida while going from place to place. These photos are just pictures that I took at the random places we stopped at. Most of them were taken at a local famous mom and pop fruit stand, which also happened to have a road bike race nearby.

Florida Trip, Part 2: Miami South Beach

We stayed the first night on Miami's South Beach district. This is the famous art deco and fashion area. It really isn't my type of scene, but it was fun to pretend I was a high roller, movie star type. The hotel we stayed at was pretty cool. It was a renovated 1940's hotel and was a very unique place to stay. The beach is literally across the street. We had a poolside bungalow room, which was awesome. The hotel is located next door to the Versace mansion which is where famed fashion designer Gianni Versace was murdered in 1997.

We didn't have a whole of time, but we did walk around and explore the South Beach area. We had some good Cuban food and I even saw my first drag queen show.

Florida Trip, Part 1: The Everglades National Park

I recently went to Florida and made a day trip out of going to visit the Everglades National Park. I have visited many National Parks and I'd have to say that this one had the most wildlife I've seen...so far.

Lots of birds and gators to see...I think it might be one of my favorite parks to date.
